My team was the first team to present on Monday, 22nd March 2010. Our team did fairly well in our presentation as we had a dry run early in the morning. We also had improvements in our slides such as a brighter background to minimise boredom and usage of animations done by Dam Long.
However, I feel that our team could have done better than the rest. Firstly, we were disadvantaged by having lesser time to prepare than others. Secondly, having presented first makes us the ‘guinea pigs’ allowing others to fine tune their project to avoid stepping into the potholes that we had already stepped in. An example would be the Problem Statement which was focused intensively. That gives other groups the opportunity to fine tune their problem statement and avoid the same mistake as us, which makes us look bad.
However, personally I think I improved significantly. I was better dressed compared to OP1, I was able to articulate my words with confidence and I managed to maintain my jokes and not get it out of hand. I also had a smooth transition to my second speaker Dam Long unlike OP1 where I realise that I was at my teammate’s PowerPoint slide. I was also satisfied to be able to give a clear and concise conclusion.
To further advance my presentation skills, I will need to be even more articulate in my gestures. I realise my gestures were unconvincing as I was reading the script. I will also need to stop reading from scripts and form my own points verbally during the presentation. Perhaps, making a video for the introduction would be better. I thought about it but its just unfortunate we didn’t had time. And yes, last thing. I will remember to iron my shirt next time.

Hi Ferrino,
ReplyDeleteI like your presentation slides, especially the slide with your group pictures. Your presentation is quite entertaining and you manage to grab the attention of the audience by cracking jokes and talks funny. But i think that your group presentation need more energy into it. After each transition of speakers, the energy seem to going down, so i think that you should work on that.
Hi Ferrino,
ReplyDeleteI agree with you that it would have been better if we can make a video for the introduction. However, if we had had enough time, we could have make our presentation even more interesting with an interview or make sounds for the slides. But now, there is no point regretting that we did not have as much time for preparation as the other two groups. The presentation was a success, I think, because all of us showed our improvements and it should be what Ms. Brenda wanted to see.
I also agree that our skills, though have been improved since the Oral Presentation 1, need to be practiced more and more. And thank you for your advice, I will try not to be monotone in the future.
Cheers,
Dam Tuan Long
Dear Ferrino,
ReplyDeleteI also agree that making a funny video to introduce us to the audience would be a really good idea. But then, we were short of time.
I think you did better in this presentation compared to the first oral presentation. You were more prepared and were able to inject quite a bit of humor and energy into your presentation. What I think you could have done better is to reduce your reliance on your notes.
One thing that I’ve noticed is that you were slouching forwards slightly as your read your notes during your presentation. It isn’t really noticeable from the front, but it’s quite obvious from where I was standing.
Other than these things, I think you did pretty well for the presentation.
Regards,
Russell
Hi Ferrino,
ReplyDeleteA possible alternative to making a script, as we were discussing the other day, is to use cue cards. I feel that a spontaneous person like you would be more comfortable if you do not have to stick to a script. A cue card would always be there to remind you in case you miss a point. As you get more confident, you can even do away with the cue card.
I'm not very convinced about the idea of a video, especially in our scenario when the presentation timing for each speaker is very little. A video may be a good idea for something light, but content-rich material is more effective when presented physically. Given the extensiveness of our project and the short time we were given to present it, the presenter may not be able to explain his point fully and make an impression on the audience.
Overall, I think you did very well for your presentation. It was interesting and the point was brought across.
Cheers,
Anuj
Dear Ferrino,
ReplyDeleteI notice that you are very serious about your clothes. It is good, since it shows that you are a very precise person and you care about details. This is a very good habit, not only in presentation, but in many other places as well. So, keep it up.
You have done a pretty good job this time, not only because you were better dressed of course. You have always been humorous and passionate, whether in your presentation or your daily life. I wonder if by doing more project with you, I will be able to become more humorous as well.
By the way, personally I think it is always good to try out some comparatively special delivering methods—like playing a piece of video—when we are the first team to present. But before you do that, it is more important to choose a proper content for your video.

Shiyan
